A study analyzes the scientific production on Mexico in Spain published in the last two decades.
Research on the Mexican presence in Spain has multiplied in the last twenty years. Studies on the image of the country, the projection of soft power and Mexican migration have received a strong boost in the last ten years, with growth both in the number of studies published and in the number of researchers from both Countries that analyze the influence of Mexicans in Spanish territory.
This is one of the conclusions of the research report Mexican Presence in Spain. Two decades of scientific research 2000-2020, prepared by Dr. José Ramón Santillán Buelna and Dr. Ulises Márquez Pulido, members of the Observatory of Mexico in Spain (Obsmex), a research center based in Barcelona that studies the Mexican presence on Spanish.
The coordination of the edition of the report was in charge of Dr. Kenia del Orbe, professor at the Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid and associate researcher at the Observatory of Mexico.
The report compiles and analyzes 125 academic works: books, chapters, reports, research articles and doctoral theses on the notoriety of Mexico on Spanish soil to describe the evolution of scientific production, type of academic work, place of publication, authorship, genre of the signatories and their discipline of knowledge. The areas of study and thematic of the works are also examined.
Other results of the study to highlight are: a) scientific production has grown exponentially, it has gone from 15 papers in 2000 to 125 in 2020; b) the research is disseminated mainly in research articles and book chapters; c) 79.2% are published in Spain and 17.6% in Mexico.Other results of the study to highlight are: a) scientific production has grown exponentially, it has gone from 15 papers in 2000 to 125 in 2020; b) the research is disseminated mainly in research articles and book chapters; c) 79.2% are published in Spain and 17.6% in Mexico.
Regarding authorship, 83.2% are signed by a single researcher; men publish 51.2% of the jobs and women 48.8%. By gender, there is equality in the production of research articles; Instead, men publish more books and reports and women more chapters and doctoral theses.
39.2% of the researchers belong to Spanish universities and 34.4% to Mexican ones, and by discipline, historians contribute 38.4% of the studies. The research also identifies four areas that have focused academic research on the Mexican presence in Spain in the last twenty years:
1. Works on the public image of the country aimed at understanding the Spanish perception of the Aztec country, the Mexican soft power, the presidents and their political management, but also addressing studies referring to the media representation of the Mexican Revolution in the press local.
2. Studies of Contemporary Mexico explain events that have developed in the last century and that have had an impact on both countries (Civil War, Zapatismo) or topics on diplomacy, Mexican investments, but seen from the Spanish perspective.
3. Studies of Culture that describe the legacy and Mexican cultural influence in Spain, in areas such as cinema, literature, painting, architecture and music.
4. Research on immigration that explains the profile of the immigrant, his adaptation and social practices. They also deal with immigration policy to join the host society. These latest investigations, due to the characteristics of a qualified immigrant that the Mexican has in Spain, will be a topic of great interest not only for the world of academia, but also for the Mexican government and the receiving society. Therefore, it is expected that the research on the subject will increase, as well as the perspectives and analysis approaches. Finally, the results of this research report are an opportunity to understand and deepen our knowledge of Mexico, Mexicans, and the Mexican in Spain, as well as our common ties that allow for a closer relationship between the two countries. The present academic work constitutes an effort in that direction.
*The Observatory of Mexico in Spain is a research center that from Barcelona studies the country's image, the projection of soft power and Mexican immigration. This work on the Profile of the correspondent in Spain, is the fourth report dedicated to IberMexican Studies, examining the presence of Mexico and Mexicans in the Peninsula.
